About the Art

Internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s. Struggling from dyslexia throughout his childhood, Mackenzie found confidence in painting and drawing and eventually summoned the courage to go to art school. After leaving art school, he spent several years working with inner-city children in London before moving to North Yorkshire to set up a studio, as well as his own gallery. Since then, he has become one of the world's most collected and sought-after artists. His art works have been exhibited in museums and galleries across 4 continents.

      Comments:

This is almost eerily striking on display, particularly when thinly framed in black.
The industrial environment is stripped down to a few basic shapes, yet the workers, although seemingly indistinguishable, are separate numerous iterations. Is the yellow of the sky from the rising sun, or is the color just a bit sulphurous from smokestacks? Are the workers trudging home from work to brick row houses, or do the tall angles of the buildings seem more like factories toward which the workers file in rows for another shift? One might assume the former, but perhaps the distinction is is not acute. The occurrence here is clearly an unremarkable one, something that has repeated countlessly and changelessly over time, but we are paused mid-event to recognize that uncelebrated stoic cast who have always faced, and managed to bear, the most unexceptional human lives. The huge prisms of buildings bring to mind the pyramids of egypt that over many decades matter-of-factly consumed countless laborers. The workers may even be a distant reminder of hopeless souls who trudge over the bridge to Hades. But this is not some dystopia. We are simply seeing what has been lived time and again, through the eyes of one who had been there and who, fortunately, can transform into something that is remarkable after all.
