National Geographic expedition photographer Stephen Alvarez is driven by a passion to shoot the world’s most formidable—and unspoiled—terrain. His first assignment took him to an elevation above 20,000 feet in the Peruvian Andes. He has photographed roadless jungles and dangerous caves in exotic locales such as Costa Rica, Borneo, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, as well as Canada and the United States. Alvarez has received awards from Communication Arts and Picture of the Year International, as well as a Banff Centre grant.
