Extraordinary photographer Brassai (born Gyula Halasz, 1899 – 1984) used his keen artistic eye to capture Paris’ enchanted nighttime ambiance in “Les Escaliers de Montmartre, Paris,” as well as the darker pubs and brothels. His alternative form of photography also led him to other subjects, such as the graffiti on Parisian walls. In addition to contributing to various magazines and publishing many books, Brassai was a regular contributor to Harper’s Bazaar for 25 years where he was given complete freedom to choose his own subjects.
