An anonymous sailor and nurse achieved worldwide fame when they locked in a passionate embrace in Victor Jorgensen’s “Kissing the War Goodbye.” Taken in New York’s Times Square on VJ Day, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Jorgensen was shooting pictures for the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit which captured the daily experiences of Navy servicemen on film. Similar to a “Life” magazine cover photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt, “Kissing the War Goodbye” ran in the “New York Times” the following day.
