About the Art

Fernando Botero illustrates that in art, as in life, it’s important to be a well-rounded person. Known for over-inflated forms which both celebrate and satirize his subjects, the Colombian-born artist had his first exhibition when he was only 19 and every piece sold. In 1969, an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York established his reputation worldwide. Botero, whose work emulates fleshy 17th century Baroque figures, believes that “art is deformation,” using his swollen figures to carry political and social commentary, targeting symbols of power and authority.
