Carl Frederik Aagaard (1833 – 1895) was a Danish artist whose realistic oil landscapes elevated him to prominence during Copenhagen’s Golden Age. His exhibitions were widely acclaimed, their realistic style enriched by his extensive travel to Italy, Switzerland and Germany. Aagaard’s work was so greatly admired, he was commissioned to paint the chapel of King Christian IV. Initially a student of drawing at the Danish Royal Academy, Aagaard was instructed by many of Denmark’s famous artists, and most profoundly influenced by landscape oil painter Peter Christian Skoovgaard.
