Gustave Baumann (1881 – 1971), an American woodcut master, produced 200 multicolor artworks in his lifetime. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Chicago and attended the city’s Art Institute. Baumann briefly studied in Munich, where he created the first woodcuts that would bring him international acclaim. He lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for more than 50 years, carving Southwestern landscapes, ancient Indian petroglyphs, and scenes of traditional pueblo life, gardens and orchards. Baumann's woodcuts are displayed in almost every major museum in the United States. His genius also extended to oils, sculpture and marionette carving.
