Universally recognized as one of the 20th century’s most significant artists, Victor Vasarely (1908 – 1997) was an artistic giant who led the Op Art movement. Strongly influenced by Constructivism, Cubism and Surrealism, the Hungarian-born Vasarely devised a new artistic language that drastically transformed nature into geometric shapes and vibrating, juxtaposed colors. He produced powerfully kinetic art with the optical illusion of movement, and drew inspiration from physics, biochemistry and magnetic fields. Reproduced on countless posters and fabrics in the 1960s, Vasarely’s brilliant works are still displayed in the contemporary collections of most major art museums worldwide.
