Zelda painted this gouache of the Smoky Mountains when she was a patient at Highland Hospital in Asheville, SC. She probably painted it in the early 1940s. Zelda liked the region and thrived on its natural beauty. Here she found equilibrium. Her Asheville landscape paintings, unlike earlier works, are a response to external realities and may have been painted on site. This is one of the rare paintings that Zelda signed.
