Usually one doesn’t readily associate creating art with the same process as sail-making, unless you’re Scott Sandell. The Minnesota-born artist has melded his life’s passions of Asian art, culture, and the sail-making process into his own unique approach to printmaking. In fact, even though his artworks are prints, they share much in common with paintings. His collages are built on layers of wet ink and running a sheet through a press that results in traditional style Asian banners. He now uses the same tools, markings and familiar assembly process that he used to create spinnakers to bring forth his artistic vision.
