Peregrine falcon. Head of a young peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). This is a tiercel, or juvenile male. Juveniles remain dependent on their parents for several months after leaving the nest. This bird is found on all continents except Antarctica. It inhabits open areas such as marshes, fields and coastal areas. The peregrine mostly preys on birds in flight, but also occasionally hunts small mammals and reptiles. It catches birds by diving at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and striking them with its talons, it then swoops back up to catch the falling bird. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.
