Sun. Computer artwork of the Sun. The granulated appearance is due to turbulence in its surface. The Sun is a massive nuclear fusion reactor in which hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium to release heat & light energy. This energy radiates out to the visible surface (the photosphere). Above this is the Sun's upper atmospheric levels, the chromosphere and corona (dense red areas). The Sun's surface is affected by magnetic fields, producing phenomena like sunspots (cool areas); solar prominences (eruptions of charged particles) and solar wind (thin red wisps). Its constant output of energy means that the Sun loses about 4 million tonnes of mass each second. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid, pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.
