Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) swimming over a coral reef. This is the small sea turtle that rarely reaches a metre in length. It is primarily herbivorous, but it will feed on corals, sponges and carrion. It is found throughout the world in tropical and subtropical seas, preferring shallow, coastal waters. It breathes air, although it can stay underwater for long periods of time, especially when resting. The female comes ashore on a sandy beach to lay her eggs, and the new hatchlings must scramble their way to the water unaided. Apart from these times, the turtle is entirely aquatic. Photographed in the Maldives.
