About the Art

Jeff Koons (1955-) is not only said to be the most successful artist of our time, he is often also referred to as the superstar of post-pop. Koons resists such comments: "A viewer might at first see irony in my work... but I see none at all. Irony causes too much critical contemplation". Koons' crucial point is to reject any hidden meaning in his artwork. The meaning is only what one perceives at first glance.Koons transfers everyday objects and icons of popular and domestic culture such as Hoover vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, and polishers into works of art. Rather than criticizing the consumerism of the modern world, he celebrates it. In 2007, Koons´s artwork “Hanging Heart” from the Celebration Series sold at Sotheby’s in New York for US $23.6 million becoming, at the time, the most expensive piece by a living artist ever auctioned.
