John James Audobon (1780-1851), American ornithologist and artist, 1851. Audubon, seen here in hunting dress, is best known for his book Birds of America, published in 1827-1838. The book contained 435 life-size illustrations of the birdlife of North America produced by Audobon on his travels around the country.
