About This Piece
The Art
David, a leading figure in the revolution and painter to Napoleon, went into exile in Brussels after the Bourbon restoration of 1815, where he painted the expatriate Gerard (17731852) a French army commander whose uniform is covered with military insignias and honours including the Lgion dhonneur. This giclée print delivers a vivid image with maximum color accuracy and exceptional resolution. The standard for museums and galleries around the world, giclée is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are “sprayed” onto high-quality paper. With the great degree of detail and smooth transitions of color gradients, giclée prints appear much more realistic than other reproduction prints. The high-quality paper (235 gsm) is acid free with a smooth surface.

The Artist
French Neo-Classical painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was the most prominently influential artist of his time and the only great master to emerge between the Rococo and the Romantic era. An active revolutionary with Robespierre, David gained prominence with Napolean’s rise to power when he became the official court painter and literally defined the style of the era. Famous for his Empire style, he featured warm Venetian colors in a rebellion against Rococo fantasy which resulted in innovative compositional departures. After the Bourbon monarchy reclaimed the throne, he was exiled to Brussels where he took on many students and continued to paint.
