Stele, Axum, Ethiopia. The city of Axum in northern Ethiopia was the centre of the Axumite Kingdom, which embraced Christianity in the 4th century during the reign of King Ezana. The city remains the holiest in Ethiopia to the country's Christian community and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980. These stelae, the tallest of which stands 24 metres high, are thought to mark graves. This example dates from the 4th or 5th century.
