There’s no doubt that a great gallery wall commands a room. But pulling one together on your own can feel overwhelming. How should you start? What artistic elements should you include? Breathe. We’ve got you covered! Read on for our curator-approved gallery wall tips.

Tools you’ll need:
- measuring tape
- level
- kraft paper
- pencil or pen
- scissors
- calculator
- painter’s tape
How to make a perfect gallery wall?
Step 1: Start measuring
Break out your trusty measuring tape and scope out the total wall space you want to fill with art. You can decorate the entire space or just a fraction of it. Your call! Other things to keep in mind:
- The highest piece of art should be 4-8 inches from the ceiling.
- The bottom of the gallery wall should be 60 inches from the floor.

Step 2: Choose a theme
Chances are you were inspired to create your own gallery wall after seeing someone else’s. But instead of copying theirs, lean into art that speaks to you. Consider these gallery wall ideas for your wall:
- Nature art featuring your favorite florals and botanicals.
- An art movement that you’re interested in (e.g., Pop Art or Surrealism)
- Use Frame My Photos to turn your family memories into decor.

Step 3: Decide how many pieces you want
A gallery wall can have as few as three pieces or as many as you can fit within the space. Once you decide on a number, choose your artworks and record their dimensions. To perfect your layout:
- Take the total width of the space and subtract a 2-inch gap for each side of each painting.
- For a wall of same-size artwork, divide the above number by how many pieces you’re hanging.

Step 4: Make cutouts
One of our best gallery wall tips to avoid extra holes in the wall? Lay out your gallery wall before you jump into hanging! We like to trace our artworks on kraft paper and cut out each shape. To stay organized, number them if you’re working with several pieces. A few additional tips:
- Tape your cutouts to the wall, arranging and rearranging until you get the perfect look.
- Try different layouts such as a grid, asymmetrical/angled, or symmetrical.
- Whichever layout you choose, ensure your centermost piece is at eye level.
