Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1939) shot to fame in 1895 with his poster for actress Sarah Bernhardt. This marked the birth of "Style Mucha" and established him as the preeminent Parisian Art Nouveau artist. Mucha is best known for his stylized Art Nouveau theatrical posters. This was due to the multi-year contract that Sarah Bernhardt offered him to create stage, costume designs, and theatrical posters. At 43, Mucha returned to Bohemia where he spent most the remainder of his life painting the 20-canvas series "Slav Epic," which celebrated a thousand years of Slav history and its people. Mucha's style experienced a revival in the 1960s by being reimagined as psychedelic posters.
