Norman Rockwell (1894 – 1978) is considered America's most famous illustrator. Rockwell captured the emotions of America and chronicled its times by illustrating over 320 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. His storied art career began early, at only 19 Rockwell became the art director of Boys' Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America. A few years later he began his tenure with the Saturday Evening Post where he spent 47 years illustrating covers for this beloved institution. Later, Rockwell addressed more serious issues of civil rights, poverty, and space exploration with Look magazine. He also came full circle by once again painting for the Boy Scouts until his death in 1978. Norman Rockwell was awarded the Presidential medal of Freedom and his works are the centerpiece of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.
