Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, and Paul Gauguin are notable artists in the Post-Impressionism art movement. Post-Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century because these artists rejected Impressionism concern with naturalistic rendering of light and color. They wanted to explore more symbolic, or abstract, content and utilize exploratory brushstrokes. While artists continued to use the same rich colors, thick paint application, and real-life subjects as Impressionists, they wanted the freedom to distort forms, emphasize geometrics, use unnatural and seemingly random colors, and play with brushstrokes. 'The Starry Night' by Vincent van Gogh is a good example of this art movement as it showcases a vibrant color palette, deliberate brushstrokes, and inventive perspective. Paul Cezanne, is said to be the father of Post-Impressionism. His 'Mont Sainte-Victoire' painting was created through sporadic brushstrokes and heightened color that gives an abstract look to the landscape.
