American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, John Audubon (1785 – 1851) completed a pictorial record of all bird species of North America called "Birds of America." It is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed and Audubon's work remains the standard against which all other bird artists are still measured. He identified 25 new species and was America's dominant wildlife artist for half a century. The Audubon Society was established in his name in the late 1800s as a reflection of his deep love of birds and his concern for conservation. There is a long list of parks, zoos, and nature institutes in the United States and Audubon's home country of France that are named in his honor.
