Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter, and printmaker, Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) is best-known for his woodblock print series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, 1831." This series includes the iconic print "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa," which gained international success in the Western world. Between the years 1796 and 1820, Hokusai created around 30,000 book illustrations and color prints inspired by Japanese traditions, legends, and daily life. Hokusai changed his name several times, each when he shifted artistic styles. He produced most of his important work after age 60. Hokusai's art career spanned the last age of Japanese history before Japan opened its doors to the western world.
