Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 – 1986) is known as the "mother of American modernism." This abstract art painter was best known for painting large scale close-ups of flowers, southwestern landscapes, animal skulls, and New York skyscrapers. O'Keeffe created a fusion of realism and abstraction. She is revered for her flower paintings, which make up most of her work. She rejected some of what she had been taught and instead painted the flowers to express how she felt. One of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century, O'Keeffe was the first woman to have her own exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. After her death in 1986, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in New Mexico was created and dedicated to her legacy.
