From the twelfth century until their abolition in the 1870s, the samurai were the Japanese warrior caste for early-modern Japanese feudal landholders. Samurai were known for their fighting prowess, deep pride in their stoicism, and strict adherence to their own code of conduct. Seppuku, or ritual suicide by disembowelment, was a respected alternative to dishonor or defeat. To honor the ancient samurai, dedicate a space in your training studio or home for artwork featuring these warriors. Look for giclee and art prints by famous Japanese artists like Kuniyoshi Utagawa's "Shimamura Danjo Takanori Riding the Waves on the Backs of Large Crabs," his "Amakasu Omi No Kami" or Ando Hiroshige's "Combat de Samurai."
