Grey squirrel. A grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) eating a nut, sitting in a patch of daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus). The grey squirrel is a native of the North American forests. The species was introduced to the UK in 1889, when 350 individuals were released in Bedfordshire. Since that time, the animals have multiplied rapidly, apparently driving out the native European red squirrel from much of the UK. Grey squirrels are now a common sight in British parks and woodlands, and are often tame enough to be fed by hand. Photographed in Kew Gardens, London, UK.
