Johannes Itten (1888 – 1967) put a new spin on the color wheel that revolutionized the world’s perception of color. Itten ingeniously transformed the existing color wheel by not only classifying color’s reflection and absorption of light, but its effect upon adjacent colors. He also added seven contrasts, and categorized color’s psychological, physical and emotional impact. A respected teacher at Germany’s Bauhaus, Itten produced the landmark book, “The Art of Color,” which became the school’s essential textbook. Itten’s visionary color theories still powerfully impact cosmetologists, artists and designers today.
